Meat Free Monday recipes are all the rage and a fun way to shake up the beginning of the week.
If you don’t believe me, just ask Paul McCartney. He even wrote a song about it!
When I started writing this blog post, I realized I had no idea where this popular Monday event started. After a quick Google search I discovered the Meat Free Monday website, and guess who was on the main page? None other than Paul McCartney!
According to my little bit of research, Paul and his family started this mission to inspire people to reduce the environmental impact of meat consumption.
“Launched by Paul, Mary and Stella McCartney in 2009, Meat Free Monday is a not-for-profit campaign which aims to raise awareness of the detrimental environmental impact of eating meat, and to encourage people to help slow climate change, preserve precious natural resources and improve their health by having at least one meat free day each week.”
Their quest to get people to eat less meat certainly seems to be working. Several years later, Meat Free Mondays are still very popular.
If you want to join in the fun, I’ve compiled a few of our favorite meatless meals. Take a look, I bet there’ll be one or two your family would enjoy too.
I have to say, pizzas are often on my Meat Free Monday menu, but I skip the prebaked pizza doughs or the canned versions. Most larger grocery stores sell dough by the bag. You can even get whole wheat if you look around. I haven’t found a household yet whose family would turn down pizza, even if it’s filled with veggies!
Now that we know the history behind Meat Free Monday, you can tell your family they’re doing something good for the environment while they eat a delicious meal at the same time.
