I Want a Totally Fattening Sausage Dog With Lots of Cheese!

by Kristi Rimkus on February 25, 2012

Do you shop at Home Depot or Costco? They have hot dogs that make my husband whine like a two year old to see if I’ll relent and go get him one.

The hot dogs are grilled with a tasty caramelized skin on the outside, and inside the meat is spicy and oh – so juicy. Then they slide them into a white bread hoagie roll so you can load them with all the fixins.

Amazing!

I must admit, on the rare occasion that we indulge in these hot dogs from heaven, I eat half of it before he can snatch it from my greedy little hands.

Open Faced Turkey Sausage and Sauerkraut Sandwich

Open Faced Turkey Sausage and Sauerkraut Sandwich

Mike’s hot dogs make him so happy, I decided to do Costco and Home Depot one better. I was going to make my husband his favorite treat, but my version would shave off a few calories and taste just as good.

Open Faced Sausage and Sauerkraut Sandwich

I’d serve my sandwich open faced with a lower calorie turkey kielbasa, then top it with colorful peppers, sauerkraut, and just enough cheese to make him happy.

Open Faced Sausage and Sauerkraut Sandwich

According to MyFitnessPal, Costco’s hot dogs weigh in at 570 calories and 33g of fat. My just as good version – I’m not shy about tooting my own horn -  has 411 calories and 18.89g of fat.

Open Faced Sausage and Sauerkraut Sandwich

Even better, I’ve added a few colorful and healthy veggies – now everyone in the house is happy. Can’t beat that!

Open Faced Hot Dog Sandwiches

Serving Size: 4

Ingredients

  • 14 ounces turkey kielbasa, one package cut into diagonal slices
  • 1 large red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 large yellow bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 large orange bell pepper , thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 cups sauerkraut
  • 4 tablespoons spicy brown mustard
  • 8 tablespoons low fat colby cheese, shredded
  • 2 large hoagie rolls

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with foil and spray with cooking spray. Spread out peppers and onions and spray vegetables with cooking spray. Sprinkle lightly with salt and roast for 30 minutes. Stir and roast another 20 minutes.
  2. Add sliced turkey kielbasa and roast another 10 - 15 minutes until the meat is heated through.
  3. Split the hoagie rolls in half and then scoop some of the middle out of each bun to make a well.
  4. Turn the oven to broil and lightly brown rolls.
  5. Top each roll with one tablespoon mustard, 1/4 of the pepper, onion and turkey mixture, and 1/2 - 1 cup sauerkraut (depending on the person's taste). Sprinkle 2 tablespoons cheese on top and return to broiler to melt cheese.

From what I’m hearing, some Home Depots don’t have them. I think diet wise, we’d be better off if ours didn’t either. :)

Hm..we have Costco and I think there are also hot dogs near the entrance.. :) But I have been only once and wasn’t tempted :)

I don’t eat hot dogs but I’d gladly tear into this one. Don’t know what’s up with our Home Depot, we only get over zealous greeters at the door, no hot dogs.

Our Home Depot has an outdoor grill and there’s always people in line waiting for a dog.

I love roasting all kinds of vegetables, but roasted peppers are so versatile that I make them all the time. Enjoy your Sunday!

What is it about Hot Dogs. I can’s even drive by The Papaya King in Hollywood without hoping for a place to park. My rule is this… if I am driving by and there is a parking spot available on the street with in one block I stop for a dog. If not I keep driving. Of course this is Los Angeles so I don’t get too many of these dogs. I never thought of recreating them at home! Thanks GREG

Now that’s a good idea. Too bad there’s always a place to park at Home Depot, or this would work for me too. Have a good Sunday. :)

“They have hot dogs that make my husband whine like a two year old to see if I’ll relent and go get him one.” I resemble your husband.

“I eat half of it before he can snatch it from my greedy little hands.” You resemble my wife!

Nice recipe – shaving off that may calories is no mean trick. I’ll eat at your house any day of the week! Thanks for this.

Love the way that you slimmed down this recipe. There is a hot dog cart on campus at my university, and every time that I walk by it an instant craving hits me for one of their NY style hot dogs. Nice to know that the flavor is easily recreatable at home!
