Whoot! Whoot! Happy Hour Gin and Tonic with a Twist of Lime

by Kristi Rimkus on July 9, 2010

We have the craziest weather in Seattle. For the past few weeks it’s been overcast, and chill you to the bone – cold. I kid you not when I say the temperature dropped to 55 degrees! Isn’t that fall and winter weather?

Naturally it rained off and on during the 4th of July weekend, but as happens most years, it’s now sunny and warm. We’ve gone from cool and cloudy to hot and sunny. Yesterday I basked in the sun and enjoyed warmth in the low 90′s.

However, while I may have reveled in this respite from rain and gloom, many Seattleites wouldn’t have agreed with me. You wouldn’t be a Seattleite if you didn’t complain about the weather, no matter what it is. We groused about the cold weather that went on for months, and now we’ll complain about the hot weather.

Mother Rimmy's Garden

I’ve decided to make the best of it and enjoy a refreshing gin and tonic in the shade of the garden.

You can count on any drink containing alcohol to have a few calories in it, and this drink isn’t an exception. If you use a diet tonic, all the calories are in the alcohol, so it’s doable if you’re watching your calories.

Don’t forget to use fresh lime, it really makes the difference between a drink that tastes flat, and one that is refreshing and fabulous. If you’re going to use your daily calories for a Happy Hour drink, make it worth every sip!

Happy, Happy Hour Friday!

In four hours, I plan on drinking a gin and tonic. It’s the perfect summer beverage (next to the tequila and tonic… which is my all time favorite).

By the way, your garden looks lovely! I dream that one day I have a garden that I can relax in.

We are enjoying the garden. It’s been some work to clean up. We just moved here, but it’s surely pretty.

It’s very pretty and I’m always up for happy hour (especially on Friday). Jealous of your cool weather though. We hit 104 a couple of days ago.

I can’t imagine. We hit 104 last year and the whole city shut down.

I think the problem is that we never get time to adjust. It’s either cold, or hot. No in-between!

looks refreshing but you’d be picking me up off the garden path after one of those…LOL

I have to admit, my husband loves these. After two, he’s napping in the sun.

We’ve been commenting on the weather out this way too (San Diego). The coast has been sunless and chilly. Feels like our winters. We don’t have much to complain about, though, in regards to weather. =)

I’m going to have to make this for Hubby and he will thoroughly enjoy. Maybe I should do like Ina and have it ready for him when he gets home. ;)

Have a great weekend!

This cocktail, also nicknamed “Skinny Bitch” (pardon my language) is popular at our house in the summer. It is a refreshing treat in the heat of the summer, and with a lot less calories than other alcoholic drinks. It’s amazing how many calories you can tack on without realizing it. This is a great way to stay on track.
Cheers!

I am a big fan of gin and tonics. In summer my favorite way to drink them is with a splash of cucumber juice. It’s the perfect freshing cocktail on a hot summer day!

krimkus July 11, 2010 at 8:13 pm

Cucumber would be really good. I’ll have to give it a try.

This is a classic drink for a reason. It’s so refreshing and perfect for summertime.

I thought the diet tonic would have an after taste, but it wasn’t bad at all.

Simple, refreshing and healthier than other choices. I’d say that was a three-fer!

I recently tried G&T with a few mint leaves muddled into it – it takes this refreshing drink to a whole new level – perfect for summer days.

I’ll have to add the mint. My husband loves G&T so I have lots of opportunities to try something new. :)

I love G&Ts especially in the summer as they are so refreshing! I recently tried G&T with elderflower cordial, which adds a nice flowery hint without being too overpowering. Or if you had the time making a lime sorbet and adding a tablespoon full is a great replacement for a slice of lime and ice cubes!

Love the Lime sorbet! I’ve not seen elderflower cordial, but I’m certainly intrigued!
